A Brief Profile of the Department
Established in the year 1984, synchronizing with the inception of the college, the department had Ms. Ila Das and Ms. Ruma Choudhury as its founding faculty. The department, known for the performance of its students in the university examinations, has to its credit a number of university toppers. The Department upgraded itself by introducing honours course at the degree level, in 1993.

  • Dr. Chandana Bhattacharjee, M.A., Ph.D., joined the college as a Lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, in August, 1993. Currently Head, Department of Antrhopology, she served as an Assistant professor at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand for one year during 1994-95.
  • Dr. Peacefully Kharkongor, M.A., Ph.D., (UGC-NET), joined the college as a Lecturer in Anthropology, in July 2006 prior to which she served as Lecturer at S. Claret College, Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh during 2004-06. She was awarded the ICSSR Research Fellowship in 2010 for a period of two years and has resumed her regular assignment at the college after completing her fellowship term. Dr. Kharkongor takes active part in the various activities of the college. Apart from being an academician, she is also a painter.
  • Dr. Sarnali Saikai, M.A., Ph.D., joined the college as a Lecturer in Anthropology, in June 2015. She actively takes participates in various academic and co-curricular activities organised in the college.
  • Dr. Asui Nsarangbe, M.A. Ph.D., UGC NET, joined the college as a Lecturer in Anthropology, in October 2016.

The Department of Economics was established coinciding with the inception of the college, in 1984. Ms. Alpana Shyam, Mr. P. Ksoo and Ms. Ruma Paul were its first three faculty members. The department has been performing moderately well. The faculty members are engaged in research activities.

  • Ms. Mayashree B. Das, M.A. M.Phil., joined the college as Lecturer in Economics, in June 1989. Currently Head, Department of Economics, Ms. Das is the Member-Coordinator of the college IQAC. She has completed two projects under ICSSR and UGC. She is also actively associated with different activities in the college.
  • Ms. Haimanti Choudhury, M.A., L.L.B., joined the college as Lecturer in Economics, in September 1990. She has worked as a co-investigator in a UGC and ICSSR-sponsored research projects. She is actively involved with various co-curricular acitivities of the college.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Madhuchhanda Dasgupta, M.A., Ph.D., joined the college as a Lecturer in Economics in August, 1993. Dr. Dasgupta also served as a faculty in the ICFAI University, Meghalaya. She has completed two Research Projects, as co-investigator, sponsored by UGC and ICSSR. Besides, she is associated with various co-curricular activities of the college.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Sangeeta Dasgupta, M.A. Ph.D., joined the college as Lecturer in Economics, in August 2002. An alumni of the college, she is an executive member of W-Alumni, the college alumni society. She is also an excellent painter and participates in various activities of the college. She is also a member of college IQAC.

Department of Education, Women’s College, has been functioning since the inception of the college in 1984. It was in the year 1994 that the department started with Honours course. Dr. (Prof.) Biloris Lyndem, (Prof.) Sherwin Sungoh and Ms. Poonam Rawat were the founding faculty of the department.

  • Dr. (Ms.) Sumana Paul,teacher, researcher in social sciences and a social worker obtained her M. A., B. Ed. and Ph. D. degrees from the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. Currently she is the Head of the Department of Education, Women’s College, Shillong. She has been teaching in this college since November, 1991. She is associated with a number of academic institutions of high repute. Credited with authorship of six books and more than one hundred articles published in national and international journals and edited volumes she is engaged in researches focussing her area of interest mainly in the educational sociology and teacher education. She has also coordinated a number of research projects, seminars, workshops and training programmes. She is also a member of the college IQAC.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Sonali Roy Paul, M.A, Ph.D., joined the college as a Lecturer in Education, in September 1994. Prior to her joining this college she was teaching Education at Don Bosco College, Tura. She has specialised in Language Education. Besides, she takes participation in various activities of the college.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Devjani Kar, M.A., Ph.D., has been serving this college as a lecturer in Education, since June 2000. She is the Co-ordinator of the UGC supported Remedial Coaching centre at the college. She takes active interest in different academic and co-curricular actiities fo the college.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Shanchuila Khamrang, M.A., Ph.D. UGC NET, joined the institution as a lecturer in Education department in October 2016. She takes active part in different college activities.

Established in the year 1984, synchronizing with the inception of the college, the department had Ms. Sukla Roy and Late Fatima Imdad Hussain as its founding faculty.

  • Ms. K. Rita Devi, M.A., and currently the Head, Department of English, joined the college as a Lecturer in English in September 1997. Being a member, she has been contributing to different committees of the college.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Sunanda Bhattacharya, M.A, Ph.D., joined the college as a Lecturer in English, in June 2000. Apart from being an academician, she is also a painter. She takes active part in different college activities. She has published her research paper in an edited volume.
  • Dr. Preetinicha Barman Prodhani, M.A., M.Phil., Ph.D., UGC NET and SET, B.Ed., joined as a Lecturer in English, in June 2013. She is actively involved with various activities of the college. She has published research papers in academic journals as well as in edited volumes.
  • Ms. Parijat Biswas, M.A., joined the department as a Lecturer, in February 2015. She is a registered research scholar at NEHU, pursuing her doctoral degree. She takes active part in different college activities.
  • Mr. Ayushman Dutta, M.A., joined the department as a Lecturer in 2018.
  • Ms. Julie Hazarika, M.A., B.T., PGDTE, joined the department as a lecturer, in 1986, before which she had worked in St. Mary’s College. She was the former Head, Department of English in this college and still helps the college as a Guest Faculty. She is actively associated with other activities in the college.

The Department of History was established in the year 1984 with two faculty members, namely, Ms. Phioshua Kharkongor and Ms. N. Hazarika. Brother D'Souza rendered his voluntary service towards the department for a short period of time.

  • Ms. Phioshua Kharkongor, M.A., M.Phil., Currently Head, Department of History, has been serving the college as a Lecturer in this department, since May 1987. She has specialization in Modern Indian History. She has been an active member of different committees of the college.
  • Ms. Ameeta Roy, M.A., M.Phil., has been serving as Lecturer in the Department of History, since February 1988. Specialized in Modern Indian History, Ms. Roy takes interest in numerous activities of the college. She has specialization in music.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Jayati Bhattacharjee, M.A., Ph.D., joined the Department of History in July 2002. Specialised in Ancient Indian History, she has also been contributing to various academic and co-curricular activities of the college. Dr. Bhattacharjee has published one book and some research papers in academic journals as well as in edited volumes.

The Department of Philosophy was established in the year 1984 with two faculty members, Dr. Nitish Pandit and Dr. Bubli Choudhury.

  • Dr. (Ms.) Monalisa Dey Banik, M.A., Ph.D., joined the college as Lecturer in Philosophy, in May 1990. Besides academics, she helps in coordinating the various academic and other events organized at the college. At present, she is the Head of the Department.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Aparna Chakraborty, M.A., Ph.D., joined the college as Lecturer in Philosophy, in August 1993. She takes interest in singing and writing poems. She is involved with various activities of the college.
  • Ms. Sima Nath, M.A., joined the college in this department , in July 2013. She takes active part in the various activities of the college.
  • Mr. Shaiborlang Kharsynteng, M.A., joined the college in this department in June 2018.

The Department of Political Science was established in the year 1984 with Prof B. Datta Roy, founder principal of the college, as its head and a few other teachers offering their voluntary service. The Department has come a long way in achieving its goal of imparting quality education to students.

  • Ms. Ruma Das, M.A., M.Phil., joined the Department of Political Science in March 1990. She has completed 2 ICSSR sponsored research projects. At present she is the head of the departmnet. She is an active member of different important committees of the college like the IQAC and has been contributing her service to the college.
  • Ms. Rose Mary Debbarma, M.A., has been serving this college as Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, since June 1997. She has completed two research projects, one under Amiyo Kumar Das Research Institute, while the other under the sponsorship of ICSSR, Shillong.
  • Mr. Vareipam Muivah, M.A., UGC NET, joined this department, in July 2001, as a Lecturer. He is a guest faculty in the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute at Shillong. He is also a guest faculty in All India Civil Service Pre-exam Training Institute, Shillong. An active teacher, he is involved with various activities of the college.
  • Mr. Elim Hmar, M.A., joined the department as a faculty member in June 2011. Apart from teaching his subject, Mr. Hmar takes particular interest in computer aided teaching. Besides, he takes partcipation in various activities of the college.

Department of Social Work was established in the college, in 2008, as a part of its academic expansion plan. Starting with Two Faculty, Ms. Magrisha D. Lyngdoh Sawkmie and Ms. Parkordor Kharkongor, the department now has six faculty members. This is the first professional education department in the college. The department has to its credit a number of university toppers every year.

  • Ms. Parkordor Kharkongor, M.S.W., UGC NET, joined the department of Social Work as Lecturer, in June 2008. Currently, Head, Department of Social Work, Ms. Kharkongor is a member of PHD-TISS(Mumbai) Women’s Cell Co-ordinator.
  • Ms. Fatima Tariang, M.S.W., joined the college as a Lecturer in the Department of Social Work, in June 2009. Specialized in HR management, she had worked as HR Executive at Bangalore prior to joining this college, for a period of two years. She is involved with various activities of the college.
  • Ms. Ibansara Mylliengap, M.S.W., UGC NET, joined this college as Lecturer in the Department of Social Work, in April 2012. She is the Associate NCC Officer with the honorary rank of Lieutenant. She completed the refreshers course for the rank of Captain of the NCC unit of the college and takes interest in other activities of the college.
  • Mr. Mathew Ma Hanah, M.S.W., NET joined the college in May 2013. He is an active member of different committees.
  • Ms. Alethea Gasanee Ranee, M.S.W., has been rendering her service as a social work teacher, since June 2013. Apart from academics, she helps in the other activities of the college.
  • Mr. Justin K. Pariong, M.S.W., joined the college in October 2018 as Field Coordinator of the department.

Coinciding with the commencement of the first academic session, the Department of Sociology at this college came into being in 1985 with Shri Y.N. Karna, Shri P.B. Nanda and Miss I.M. Syiem as its founding faculty members. Initially starting as a department engaged in teaching degree classes at pass course level alone under affiliation of the North Eastern Hill University, the department’s affiliation status was eventually upgraded to teaching at honours level, in 1994. The department has been able to maintain consistent record of performance ever since the beginning.

  • Dr. (Ms.) Nila Dutta, Ph.D, M.A., UGC NET, B.Ed., joined the college as Lecturer in Sociology, in June 2000. She is an active member of different committees of the college. Currently she is the Head of the Department.
  • Dr. (Ms.) Eunice Lalpiengzo Neitham, M.A., Ph.D., UGC JRF/NET, has joined the college as a Lecturer, in June 2015. She is involved with various activities of the college.
  • Mr. Nehemaiah Nongpluh, M.A., joined the college as Lecturer in Sociology, in September 2016.

The Department of Computer Studies began in 2007. The Department offers Computer Application as a subject of study up to Plus Two level which has been delinked from the U.G. Programme of Studies since 2019. The Department also runs the IGNOU linked programmes on computer studies including the BCA programme under IGNOU’s Convergence Scheme. In addition, it organizes the Computer Literacy Programme arranged by the college for all students under the enrichment facilities that the college offers.

  • Mr Ajit Paul, M.Sc. In Computer Science, joined this department in June 2011. Mr Paul takes keen interest in the development of the deparment as well as actively participates in the other activities of the college.

Bengali

The Department of Bengali is a Language Group Department that is in existence since the inception of the college, in the year 1984. Ms. Bandana Roy was the founder faculty of this department. The department offers courses in Bengali for both Modern Indian Languages and Elective Language.

  • Dr. Debsakti Dutta, M.A., Ph.D., joined the college as Lecturer in the department of Bengali, in August 2008. Dr Dutta takes interest in the various activities of the college. He is also the Programme Officer of the NSS unit of the college. He completed his doctorate in Burdwan University. He has published his poems in different volumes.

Hindi

The Department of Hindi is a Language Groupt Department that is in existence, since 1985. Smt. Usha Thakur was the founder faculty of this department. The department offers courses in Hindi for both Modern Indian Languages and Elective Language.

  • Dr. Rajkumar Jha, M.A., Ph.D., UGC NET, B.Ed., teaches Modern Indian Languages (Hindi) and Elective Language (Hindi) in the college since August 2008. He is also a member of BOS, NEHU. He is actively associated with other activities in the college.

Khasi

The department offers courses in Khasi for both Modern Indian Languages and Elective Language. It is established in the year 1985. The department had Mr. Tom Taylor Mukhim as its founding faculty assisted by Dr. Khongai.

  • Mr. Cosmas Rynshon, M.A., joined the college as a Lecturer in Khasi, in September 1991. The Programme Officer of the NSS unit of thecollege, Mr. Rynshon is the Head of the Department of Khasi and is associated with a number of activities in the college.
  • Ms. Olisha Warjri, M.A., M.Phil., joined the college as a Lecturer in Khasi, in August 2000. Apart from her teaching activities, she is associated with other events in the college.

Mizo

The department offers courses in Mizo for both Modern Indian Langauges and Elective Language. It is established in the year 1985.

  • Mr. Roluahpuia Solo, M.A., LLB, SLEUniversity of Southern California, Los Angles (USA), joined the department of Mizo (Modern Indian Languages) in July 2009.
