A Brief Profile of the Department
Established in the year 1984, synchronizing with the inception of the college, the department had Ms. Ila Das and Ms. Ruma Choudhury as its founding faculty. The department, known for the performance of its students in the university examinations, has to its credit a number of university toppers. The Department upgraded itself by introducing honours course at the degree level, in 1993.
The Department of Economics was established coinciding with the inception of the college, in 1984. Ms. Alpana Shyam, Mr. P. Ksoo and Ms. Ruma Paul were its first three faculty members. The department has been performing moderately well. The faculty members are engaged in research activities.
Department of Education, Women’s College, has been functioning since the inception of the college in 1984. It was in the year 1994 that the department started with Honours course. Dr. (Prof.) Biloris Lyndem, (Prof.) Sherwin Sungoh and Ms. Poonam Rawat were the founding faculty of the department.
Established in the year 1984, synchronizing with the inception of the college, the department had Ms. Sukla Roy and Late Fatima Imdad Hussain as its founding faculty.
The Department of History was established in the year 1984 with two faculty members, namely, Ms. Phioshua Kharkongor and Ms. N. Hazarika. Brother D'Souza rendered his voluntary service towards the department for a short period of time.
The Department of Philosophy was established in the year 1984 with two faculty members, Dr. Nitish Pandit and Dr. Bubli Choudhury.
The Department of Political Science was established in the year 1984 with Prof B. Datta Roy, founder principal of the college, as its head and a few other teachers offering their voluntary service. The Department has come a long way in achieving its goal of imparting quality education to students.
Department of Social Work was established in the college, in 2008, as a part of its academic expansion plan. Starting with Two Faculty, Ms. Magrisha D. Lyngdoh Sawkmie and Ms. Parkordor Kharkongor, the department now has six faculty members. This is the first professional education department in the college. The department has to its credit a number of university toppers every year.
Coinciding with the commencement of the first academic session, the Department of Sociology at this college came into being in 1985 with Shri Y.N. Karna, Shri P.B. Nanda and Miss I.M. Syiem as its founding faculty members. Initially starting as a department engaged in teaching degree classes at pass course level alone under affiliation of the North Eastern Hill University, the department’s affiliation status was eventually upgraded to teaching at honours level, in 1994. The department has been able to maintain consistent record of performance ever since the beginning.
The Department of Computer Studies began in 2007. The Department offers Computer Application as a subject of study up to Plus Two level which has been delinked from the U.G. Programme of Studies since 2019. The Department also runs the IGNOU linked programmes on computer studies including the BCA programme under IGNOU’s Convergence Scheme. In addition, it organizes the Computer Literacy Programme arranged by the college for all students under the enrichment facilities that the college offers.
The Department of Bengali is a Language Group Department that is in existence since the inception of the college, in the year 1984. Ms. Bandana Roy was the founder faculty of this department. The department offers courses in Bengali for both Modern Indian Languages and Elective Language.
The Department of Hindi is a Language Groupt Department that is in existence, since 1985. Smt. Usha Thakur was the founder faculty of this department. The department offers courses in Hindi for both Modern Indian Languages and Elective Language.
The department offers courses in Khasi for both Modern Indian Languages and Elective Language. It is established in the year 1985. The department had Mr. Tom Taylor Mukhim as its founding faculty assisted by Dr. Khongai.
