The Department of English, Women’s College, Shillong was established in the year 1984 along with the establishment of the college. Two dedicated founder teachers, Mrs. Sukla Roy and late Fatima Imdad Hussain, were at the helm from 1985 with an enrolment of twenty five students. They diligently built up the department of the college which began as a morning college in the St. Edmund’s College premises. Mrs. Hussain remained in the college until January 1999, proving to be our abiding inspiration.In 1986 Mrs. Julie Hazarika joined the department and is still serving as a guest lecturer. Major classes were introduced in the year 1994 and with the increase in the roll strength there was no looking back. Ms. Bhaswati Chatterjee, Ms. Banita Goswami and Mr. Abhijit Sharma Roy also contributed to the developmental process during their short tenures. Next to join the department was Dr. Sukalpa Bhattacharjee, whose career in the college was brief as she moved on to G.C. College in her hometown Silchar, and then on to NEHU, Shillong. In her short term, Sukalpa was very active in organising seminars and encouraging the students to participate in debates bringing laurels to the college. Like her predecessors, Sukalpa proved to be a great asset to the college. In 1996, Ms. K. Rita Devi joined the college and is serving still. She was followed by Ms. Niyontri Bhattacharjee, who diligently served the department. Ms. Sunanda Bhattacharya, joined as a faculty in November 1999, and is providing active service. Dr. Preetinicha Barman who joined the department in 2013 was followed by Ms. Parijat Biswas in 2014 and Mr. Ayushman Dutta in 2018.
Ms. Mitali Bhattacharjee, Ms.Sengchi P. Marak, Mr. Surajit Sen, Ms. Sandashisha Laloo, Ms. Shimsoshin Hungyo, Ms. Arundhuti Paul, Ms. Nilanjana Ghatak, Mr.Aveek Lyngdoh, Ms. Lashynna Duncan and Ms. Archana K. Marak, also rendered their services to the department. All those who joined the department have contributed significantly to its development. The department gratefully records the invaluable service rendered by so many dedicated people.
The department is currently functioning with a total of six faculty members- Ms. K. Rita Devi, Dr. Sunanda Bhattacharya, Dr. Preetinicha Barman, Ms. Parijat Biswas, Mr. Ayushman Dutta and Ms. Julie Hazarika. Guest Lectures are organised by the department on a regular basis. Seminars, Workshops, Inter- College Students’ Seminar are also organised by the department. Eminent scholars are frequently invited to address and interact with the faculty, staff and students.
Students of the department have excelled in various academic as well as extra- curricular activities of the college. In the academic field, other than Sophia Alphonse’s excellent results in 1996, a student of the department, Horching Ramrar, secured the First Class Tenth Position in English Honours, in the year 2017. The students have brought laurels to the department excelling in debates, poetry and essay writing competitions. Sophia Alphonse, Pdianghun Kharbithai and Horching Ramrar brought laurels to the college as debaters. Pdianghun Kharbithai is a budding young singer and many of her songs have been recorded. Horching Ramrar participated in essay writing competition and was awarded on various occasions, even at national levels. Rodingpuii published a collection of poems entitled, Second hand Scars, from Gilzom Offset Publishers, Aizawl, in the year, 2019. She was also awarded the first prize inpoetry competition.
