Department ofHistory

The department of History was established since the inception of the college in the year 1984 with the founding faculty members Ms. Phioshuua Kharkongor, and Mrs. N. Hazarika. Mrs. Hazarika resigned from the department in the year 1986. Following her resignation, the college authorities absorbed Ms. Judy H. Buam into the department in the year 1986 until her resignation in the year 1997. Thereafter, the college authorities absorbed Ms. Amita Roy in the year 1988 who is the current assistant professor of the department. Professor C.S Thakur of St Anthony's college,Shillong also rendered his voluntary service for the department in the year 1989-1990. The college also recruited Mr. B. Basumatary in the year 1997 but he resigned in 1998 to persue his teaching career in his hometown in Kokrajhar, Assam. In course of time the college authorities recruited Dr. (Ms.) Angira Kar in the year 2000 and Dr. (Ms.) Jayati Bhattacharjee in the year 2002.Both the teachers are currently assistant professors of the department. Eventually the major stream was introduced in the department in the year 1994.

Thakur, Reader, Department of History, NEHU Shillong. *Dr. (Ms.) M. Momin, HOD History, NEHU, Shillong. *Dr. S. Kamare, Associate Professor, Department of History, NEHU, Shillong.

Achievements: Two faculty members of the department has been awarded the degree of Philosophy (PhD)in History by the Department of History, NEHU, Shillong. *Dr. Jayati Bhattacharjee 2011 *Dr. Angira Kar 2017.

Faculty

Dr. Angira Kar

M.A. (History), Ph.D.

Dr. Angira Kar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History, Womens’ College Shillong. She is specialised in Modern Indian History. Her main areas of teaching and research include Indian and World histories, society, economy and culture of the tribes of north-east India. She takes interest in the study of trends and developments with regard to the social and economic life of the people of the region and Eastern Bengal with particular reference to trade and markets in historical perspectives. Dr.Kar graduated from Lady Keane College, Shillong (1988)and completed M.A (1990), M. Phil. (1993) and Ph.D. (2017) from the Department of History, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

Dr. Jayati Bhattacharjee

M.A. (History), Ph.D.

Dr. Jayati Bhattacharjee joined Women’s College,Shillong as a faculty in the Department of History in 2002 and has been serving this institution for 18 years. Apart from teaching at +2 and Degree (Pass & Hons.) levels, she has been sharing administrative duties with her colleagues as a member of different committees, and has conducted a National Seminar at the college in 2016.
