Department ofPhilosophy
The Department of Philosophy, Women’s College Shillong came into existence with the establishment of the College in 1984. Though initially only General Course in Philosophy was offered in the Department along with Pre-University Logic Courses, later in 1994 Philosophy was introduced as an Honours Subject and two students took the first Philosophy Honours examination and both came out successful.
The Department initially started with some part time teachers, Dr. Bubly Choudhury, Dr. Nitish Pandit, Ms. Anupa Saha and Ms Sumitra Majumder. The first full time teacher was Ms Sanu Mukherjee who joined the college on 1st February 1988. She also became the Head of the Department and retired from her post on 30th November 2011. After her retirement Dr. Monalisa Dey Banik took over the charge as the Head of the Department and has been continuing till date.
Today the faculty comprises of four full time teachers with varying specializations to meet the requirement of the curriculum .
Apart from teaching activities, teachers of the Department participate regularly in seminars and workshops organised by colleges and universities. The Department also organises Guest Lectures with eminent personalities on a regular basis.
Achievements of our past students: In 2011, Ms. Jayashree Biswas secured 1st class 4th position and in the same year Ms Kiran Kaur secured 1st class 6th position. In 2018, Ms Sanimanbha Siangshai secured 1st class 3rd position. In 2019, Ms Alfiness Dkhar secured 1st class 7th position.

Dr. Monalisa Dey Banik
M.A. (Philosophy), Ph.D.
Dr. Monalisa Dey Banik (M.A.,Ph.D) has joined the Department of Philosophy, Women’s College, Shillong on May 25, 1990. She was awarded Doctoral Degree in the year 2000 for the thesis entitled “The Absolute: A study in the Neo-Vedanta of Vivekananda”. She is currently serving the North Eastern Hill University as a member of the Board of Studies in Philosophy. She also participates regularly in seminars and workshops organised by colleges and universities. Her areas of interest in Philosophy is Metaphysics , Ethics and Logic.She was the convener of Events Management Cell and looked after the organization of the events held in the institution. She is presently the member of the Examination Committee of Women’s College. She was also awarded Sangeet Visharad in the year 1992 in Guitar by Sarba Bharatiya Sangeet-O-Sanskriti Parishad.
Dr. Aparna Chakraborty
M.A. (Philosophy), Ph.D.
Dr. Aparna Chakraborty completed herM.AM.Phil. andPh.D. from the North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. She joined Women’s College, Shillong in the year 1993 as a Lecturer in Philosophy.At present she is working as an Assistant professor in Women’s College Shillong.She likes to pursue her individual research work in academic field.She is a Member of Bangiya Sahitya Parishod, Shillong, Meghalaya, since 2015. She is Associated with the Literary and Cultural activities organised by the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Shillong Meghalaya, since 2009. She is also associated with the cultural activities organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations(ICCR) Brook Side, Rilbong Shillong, Meghalaya, since 2016.She has published two books on Philosophy and a poetry book.
Ms. Sima Nath
M.A.(Philosophy)
Ms. Sima Nath joined the Dept of Philosophy in the year 2013. Her area of interest is Environmental Ethics. She takes active part in the various programmes of the college.
Mr. Shaiborlang Kharsynteng
M.A.(Philosophy)
Mr. Shaiborlang Kharsynteng completed B.A. from St. Anthony's College, Shillong and M.A. (Philosophy) from NEHU in 2011. He is pursuing research (PhD) since 2015. His research interest is in the area of religious studies, precisely to do a comparative study between different religious worldview. As of now his academic goal is to do a proper research about the subject matter that he teaches.
