Department ofPhilosophy

The Department of Philosophy, Women’s College Shillong came into existence with the establishment of the College in 1984. Though initially only General Course in Philosophy was offered in the Department along with Pre-University Logic Courses, later in 1994 Philosophy was introduced as an Honours Subject and two students took the first Philosophy Honours examination and both came out successful.

The Department initially started with some part time teachers, Dr. Bubly Choudhury, Dr. Nitish Pandit, Ms. Anupa Saha and Ms Sumitra Majumder. The first full time teacher was Ms Sanu Mukherjee who joined the college on 1st February 1988. She also became the Head of the Department and retired from her post on 30th November 2011. After her retirement Dr. Monalisa Dey Banik took over the charge as the Head of the Department and has been continuing till date.

Today the faculty comprises of four full time teachers with varying specializations to meet the requirement of the curriculum .

Apart from teaching activities, teachers of the Department participate regularly in seminars and workshops organised by colleges and universities. The Department also organises Guest Lectures with eminent personalities on a regular basis.

Achievements of our past students: In 2011, Ms. Jayashree Biswas secured 1st class 4th position and in the same year Ms Kiran Kaur secured 1st class 6th position. In 2018, Ms Sanimanbha Siangshai secured 1st class 3rd position. In 2019, Ms Alfiness Dkhar secured 1st class 7th position.
