Department ofSocial Work
The Department of Social Work was established in the year 2008. The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) course is a professional course and it is affiliated to the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU), Shillong. The department had a humble beginning with two teachers Mrs Margrisha Lyngdoh Sawkmie and Mrs Parkordor Kharkongor.
The department over the years has organised the following events:
- Outreach Programs in the form of Health Camps, Awareness Programmes, Sport Competitions, Role plays, Mime shows, Flash Mob etc.
- Observation of Important Days like International World AIDS day, International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Anti Child Labour Day etc.
- Observation of Birth / Death Anniversary of Important Eminent Personalities.
- Panel Discussions
- Rural Camp, Study Tour, Orientation Visit as per the Prescribed Syllabus.
Certificate course for the BSW students:
- Leadership Qualities and Confidence Building in collaboration with Polaris Enterprise, Shillong.
- Basic Computer Literacy Class.
- National Seminar on 'Child Advocacy: A Collective Call to Action' in October 25th – 26th, 2013.
Faculty
Ms. Parkordor Kharkongor
M.S.W.
Ms. Parkordor Kharkongor joined the institution in the year 2008, since the inception of the Department of Social work. She holds a master degree in Master of Social Work (MSW), and is National Eligible Test (NET) qualified. At present, she is doing her Ph.D. at Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), Mumbai. Since 2010, she has been the Head of the Department and under her headship, the department has produced toppers in the university examinations year on year. She is also the Coordinator of the Women’s Cell of the college and a member of the Research Committee in the same. Ms. Parkordor was also the Coordinator in the making of a documentary on ‘Human Trafficking’, a project by the Meghalaya State Commission for Women, Govt. of Meghalaya. She is also an active member of the Support Group for Women, Meghalaya State Commission for Women and is an active participant in various seminars, workshops and conferences etc. and has also presented, chaired and published in such platforms. In her free time, she enjoys gardening and cooking; while travelling, taking adventurous trips and writing are some of her retirement goals. Her interest is the United Nations Organisation's Womens related issues and problems, Environment etc.
Ms. Fatima Tariang
M.S.W.
Ms. Fatima Tariang joined the college in January 2009. Her area of specialization is Human Resource Management.
Ms. Ibansara Mylliemngap
M.S.W.
Ms. Ibansara Mylliemngap holds a Master’s Degree in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work from Karnataka University and also qualified NET. At present, she is a research scholar in the department of Adult and Continuing Education, NEHU. She is specifically interested in qualitative research in the field of Environment, Mental Health and Social Issues. She is an Associate NCC Officer and achieved an honorary rank of Lieutenant after completing training from Officer’s Training Academy, Gwalior. She also completed her training for the promotional rank of Captain in the year 2019. She received a Gold Medal in Commanding Parade and possess a certificate of excellence in yoga and certificate of excellence in organizing relief camps. Her short term academic goals consist of publication of books and research papers, presenting papers in national and international platforms. Her long term academic goals include developing tools and approaches to make learning more interesting and to utilize her professional acumen which helps the institution to develop and grow. She was associated with the counselling cell and sports committee. Now she is the convener of NCC, Disaster Management Cell and Online Courses.
Mr. Mathew Ma Hanah
M.S.W.
Mr. Mathew Ma Hanah is affiliated to the Department of Social Work,Women’s College,Shillong.He holds a Master Degree in Social Work(Community Development) from St.Aloysius College (Autonomous)Mangalore and a Bachelor Degree in Social Work from St.Edmund’s College, Shillong.Prior to his joining the institute of Women’s College,he was a Guest Lecturer at St.Edmund’s College for a period of 3 months.He had attended several national and international seminars, workshops and conferences.His area of interest is in experimenting, identifying and engaging the people in community work for sustainability at the grass root level.
Ms. Alethea Gasanee Ranee

Ms. Alethea Gasanee Ranee, is a faculty in the Department of Social Work, Women’s College since 2013, she is also a member of the Admission Committee that foresee new admissions to the college. As part of the syllabus of the course, she also organizes and accompanies the students for Study Tours and Rural Camps along with other faculty members that may take place within the State of Meghalaya or outside the State. She has attended many Seminars and workshops organized by different Non-Governmental Organisations and educational institutions in the State relating to different social issues. She has completed a three (3) months certificate course on De-addiction Counseling and Rehabilitation organized by National Institute of Social Defence, New Delhi in the year 2012 and a one (1) month basic certificate course on Drug Abuse Prevention organized by Regional Resource and Training Centre North East- II in the year 2012. She was a former counselor at the New Hope De-addiction Centre for Two (2) years (2011-2013). Her goal is to become a counsellor and help students and individuals and also to publish articles. She is actively involved in Church and child sponsorship for an International Organization.
Mr. Justin K. Pariong
M.S.W.
Mr. Justin K. Pariong joined the college in October 2018 as Field Coordinator in the Department of Social Work. He holds a Master’s degree in Social work from a Central university, NEHU. He also has to his credits certificates of various training programmes and workshops. He has also served as a project manager in Child Development Centre under Compassion International and as a Counsellor at various orphanages in the state and during his master’s he volunteered in KRIPA Foundation- the de-addiction and rehabilitation Centre for the youth in Shillong.
