Department ofSociology
Department of Sociology, Women’s College was established in the year 1984, headed by Mr. Y. N. Karna, Mr. Ashoka Lyngdoh and Ms. Akilarisha Lyngdoh. These teachers were highly dedicated, inspiring and had given a wonderful service to the students’ community.
Eventually Ms. Chongboi Lhouvum, Dr. Pr. Dimchuilui, Dr. Charles, Ms. Lisa Dkhar and Ms. Shelly Basumatary also served in the department for some period of time. Currently, there are four faculties in the department, namely, Dr. Nila Dutta (H.O.D), Dr. Eunice L. Neitham, Mr Nehemaiah Nongpluh and Ms. Enguhtrey N. Pyrtuh.
The Department has come a long way and has shown a significant growth in terms of the number and overall development of its students. From its inception, the department has focused and strived for excellence in academics as well as non-academic activities. The faculties always give more stress on providing the best opportunity to the students so that they become able to relate their classroom teaching with ground reality. The alumni of the department are well placed in different private and public sectors and organisations of the society.
Here, it is worth mentioning that as far as academic achievements are concerned, the department has always been consistent to produce rank holders with more than 90% pass percentage. The faculties adopt innovative teaching methods in order to discover the hidden potentialities of the students so that these could be best used for their future growth.
The Department has from time to time, organised guest lectures and students ‘seminars in order to make their students aware of the changing needs of the time. In the year 2014, the Department of Sociology had organised a two days National Seminar on “Rural Development: Problems and Prospects in the context of North-East India.”
